Jay Cutler‘s expected ride off into the broadcast booth might not happen so soon.

With Ryan Tannehill‘s status seriously in question, the Miami Dolphins and Cutler’s representation have discussed a potential deal, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed. Nothing has been agreed upon, but Cutler is Miami’s top choice, Rapoport added. Continue reading

The Texans have won the AFC South in consecutive seasons, but judging by the way their quarterback position was evaluated in the offseason, you wouldn’t know it.

Need more proof? With coach Bill O’Brien showering praise on Deshaun Watson earlier this week, Houston is looking at the possibility of starting a rookie behind center in Week 1. That’s usually typical of a franchise far from the postseason (i.e., the Browns, who are giving DeShone Kizer plenty of reps), not a defending division champion. Continue reading

In its early days, journeying through the Pro Football Hall of Fame was more like taking a stroll.

Enter through the front doors of the circular main building, walk up the rotunda ramp around a statue of Jim Thorpe, view a collection of football artifacts, walk through a few more modest rooms filled with busts and exhibits, and that was pretty much it.

These days, a fan needs almost an entire day to get through the meat and potatoes of the Hall’s exhibits. Soon enough, it’ll be a week.

Professional football’s most hallowed ground has long stood as a monument to the game in the city where it started, but it didn’t offer much more. Under the direction of president David Baker, it’s slowly transforming into football’s Disneyland. Continue reading

Kurt Warner is in Canton. His extended family is not.

Warner tried to use his newly acquired Hall of Fame clout (piled on top of his NFL Network and Super Bowl champion clout) to sway a major airline company to squeeze his traveling party of 13 onto the last flight to Cleveland in order to get them to Canton in time for Enshrinement Weekend. Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill didn’t wait to take matters into his own hands. The Hall of Fame Game won’t feature most starters on Thursday night.

Following Bruce Arians’ announcement that he won’t play his starters, the Cowboys also sat most of their first-stringers, though safeties Byron Jones and Jeff Heath, and offensive linemen La’El Collins and Jonathan Cooper did play. Kellen Moore will start in place of Dak Prescott at quarterback for Dallas.

Beginning with his memorable performance in the Rose Bowl, 2017 has so far been the year of Southern California quarterback Sam Darnold. At least one of Darnold’s teammates isn’t letting that slow his own pursuit of college football’s top honor.

Cornerback Jack Jones was an occasional participant as a freshman in 2016, but he’s been drawing rave reviews during the offseason, starting with his spring ball play. He’s decided to crank up the hype a notch early in fall camp, according to Joey Kaufman of the Orange County Register.

Darnold is the sweetheart pick of most everyone when it comes to college QBs and he can be found on most Heisman watch lists. Jones, though a favorite breakout candidate on campus, is putting himself in pretty good company. He did something similar prior to his freshman season, when he said he expected to win the award.

The last defensive back to win the Heisman was Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997. Do-everything Michigan Wolverines defender Jabrill Peppers finished fifth in voting in 2016.

Jones is stepping into the role vacated by Adoree’ Jackson, who was a two-way threat and departed for the NFL via first-round selection. Coach Clay Helton said during spring practice he intended to get Jones some looks on the other side of the ball, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jones appear in situations similar to Jackson in past seasons.

As for that Heisman bid, we’ll have to wait and see if Jones can make good on his word.
