One Super Bowl champion has parlayed his part in a title run into a new deal.

The St. Louis Rams have signed linebacker Akeem Ayers, the team announced. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Ayers’ deal is for two years, per a team source.

Deemed expendable in October by the Titans after three seasons in Tennessee, the team traded Ayers and a seventh-round pick to New England for the Patriots‘ sixth-round selection. He proved to be a valuable addition to a defense that was banged-up and in need of help at linebacker.

Ayers started in four of the nine games in which he appeared and tallied 20 tackles (16 solo), 4.0 sacks and one interception with the Patriots. Ayers also happened to be the player who ran off the field in exchange for Malcolm Butler on second-and-goal from the 1 in Super Bowl XLIX, and we know how that turned out.

Ayers joins a front seven that includes linebackers James Laurinaitis and Alec Ogletree, and defensive linemen Chris Long, Robert Quinn, Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers. In short, he won’t need to be a star to be effective as part of St. Louis’ defense.
